Our Finished media Video - One Direction One Thing

Vodcast Summarising What i have learnt through summer research

5 Music Videos Eg.11-15

Slow pace lip synching
Boyzone- No matter what

Pace-
the pace is slow , the editing matches this by having long shots however they so not get boring as there is a lot of shot variety. There are also some short takes when the chorus starts as there are parts where they all sing together not just individually.
 Fx-
Cross dissolve
there is some layering and cross dissolve transitions used. These are appropriate for the tone of the song being slow pace and gentle. They have also used fading from shot to shot this links with this genre well and fist very well with the calm effect of the video.
Direct connection with audience
Audience-
There is a direct connection with the audience. they look directly into the camera to build a relationship with the audience.they all look directly into camera lens to create a sense of building a personal relationship with the audience.

5 seconds of summer- out of my limit

performance footage
narrative / performance-
the footage is performance footage for this boy band. all the video is them getting ready behind the scenes before there concert. This is very common in music vids and in band videos to link with the audience that they are normal people similar to one directions videos.

Shot variety

shot variety-
there is shot variety which fits with the pace of the song being fast. there is a lot of very different shot from different angles this makes it very realistic them behind the stage as we can see instruments and a live performance. The shot variety also does not just focus on the band.

Location- behind the scenes

location / mise en scene-
The location is behind the scenes at one of there gigs. A lot of boy bands do this to show that they are normal and can relate to there target audience . They also are wearing costumes such as shirts and jeans this is also very similar for other boy bands that have very similar images.

Little Mix - Change your life
Framing
 Framing-

there is a lot of clever framing in the video this is one example this has also intertexual references with the group as it is there tour this also sets the scene. This is also framed over her shoulder as she is writing in her diary. This is a very suttle way of setting the scene we could perhaps use something like this.

Star Treatment

Star Treatment:
There is no star treatment it is all balanced out very well. There is not one main leader of the group they all have equal parts in this video. They have also done a behind the scenes video this could also be to connect with the audience, since the song is called 'change your life' they are representing this very well. This is a way of connecting with the audience as it just shows they are normal and have normal lives.

lip synching
Lip synching-
There is lip synching but mainly at the chorus , in the video there is not much as it is telling a narrative.About them changing there lives. the lip synching is throughout but mainly at the chorus where it is genuine live performance.

Eg.10 JLS- Beat Again

ACT: JLS
TRACK: Beat Again
YEAR: 2009
DIRECTOR: Steve mac
GENRE: Pop / rand b
MAIN AUDIENCE: significant F 15-24 appeal?

Dancing
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN VISUALS + LYRICS:
there is not a direct between visuals and lyrics because it is all performance footage there is not much narrative as they dance and and lip synch. there is a lot of dancing where they use movements which fit with the lyrics such as beat again they use there hands to show there heart beating.

PERFORMANCE STYLE:
there is a lot of performance footage however is is not very realistic as we cant see any instruments . i think it would be hard to achieve this as they are advanced dancers and it would be hard to learn the choreography . the shots are often still and static shots however there are some tracking shots. The steps in the chorus are frequently repeated as the audience can then relate to this.
Direct contact with audience
LOOKING/MODE OF ADDRESS:
the band sing into the camera and look directly into the camera this is very typical for the boy band genre as it makes the audience feel involved and love them more. they do this on purpose to attract girls and invite all ages.

REPRESENTATIONS:
there are many representations within this video , such as all the boys being of different nationality we often only see white bands. They also are boys to represent the typical boy band stereo type.
PACE + ANY VARIATION OF PACE:
2 shot
the pace is slow but the shots change frequently , they also use a wide range of shots to make the video more interesting despite the slowish pace of the video. The video is also very smooth and consistent which is good.At the chorus the pace does pick up the shot however are still long takes this could be because of the performance footage used.
Transition at beginning

FX: there is some special effects used such as the layering and the transitions . they have used transitions such as fading and cross dissolve at some parts. They have also used at the beginning a transition which is like a heat beat to fit with the song title and opens the song.

Costume
LOCATION/S + MISE-EN-SCENE:
mise en scene costumes are all matching the same colour scheme to link the boy band together and to give them there own image as a group. The costume is chosen on purpose to also attract women as they are wearing baggy t shirts and low cut shirts and open shirts.the location is a studio there is only one set up as it is all filmed there as most of it is performance footage and lip synching.this is very common for boy bands from my previous research this is a common characteristic.

Eg.9 S club 7 - Reach

ACT: S club 7
TRACK: Reach
YEAR: 2000
DIRECTOR: Cathy Dennis
GENRE: Pop
MAIN AUDIENCE: M 15-24; significant F 15-24 appeal

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN VISUALS + LYRICS:
There is again no direct link between lyrics and visuals , however over all there is a link as it is more symbolic meaning. They use hand movements and there mannerisms to link such as 'good friends there for each other' they pat each other on the back.

Lip synching
GENRE CHARACTERISTICS:
this video is very cheesy like pop videos of this time are. This makes it suitable for all ages. They also have typical genre characteristics such as them lip synching and having them singing directly into the camera to build relationship with the audience.
Rainbow bus

PERFORMANCE, NARRATIVE AND/OR CONCEPT?:
there is a narrative concept, which is again symbolic however they are on a rainbow bus the lyrics link over all with the ending of the video. There is some performance but it is not realistic.

LOOKING/MODE OF ADDRESS:
They look directly into the camera. this is so they can build a relationship with the audience . However it is not often they do this as they are often looking and lip synching to others within the video , and the audience in the video.

AUDIENCE IN VID?:
Audience in vid
there is audience in the video of younger children , this is there target audience and young teens. This is very appropriate as this is there target audience .

SHOT VARIETY + NO. OF SETUPS: .
there is not much shot variety , the video seems old and very un realistic for its time , this could be because of the time it was made. The song however is suppose to be un realistic as it targeted at the younger years. There are a number of set ups but the takes are very long but moving this however does not fit with the pace , and when the shots need to be longer they are cut shorter such as the chorus is cut and this does not work well.

FX: They have used some special effects but not a lot of variety they have fades and a few transitions. Apart from that they have a small amount of layering which does work in some sections. They also when they are eating the sweets have effects on them to makes them shine and glow.

Costume
LOCATION/S + MISE-EN-SCENE:
they have used a few locations but all very unrealistic and in a studio we can tell this by the bus they have used which has no one driving it and is very un realistic in the setting . As wee do not see all the members of band we do not get to see there costume well they do not seem to match but to be wearing plain normal casual clothing.

Eg.8 Destinys Child - Bootylicious

ACT: Destinys Child
TRACK: Bootylicious
YEAR: 2000
DIRECTOR: beyonce
GENRE: r and b, Hip hop
MAIN AUDIENCE: M 15-24; significant F 15-24 appeal
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN VISUALS + LYRICS:
No direct link
there is a bigger aspect to the video , about the body being 'bootylicious' the visuals are there for based on this. such as the girls wearing tight clothing . the visuals do not literally link to the lyrics they don't really symbolic either, It is a more over all aspect.

GENRE CHARACTERISTICS:
this  video contains the typical genre characteristics such as all girl band , wearing matching clothing singing into the camera. Appealing to both audiences. They are all r and b which is a lot different to pop music, as it does not contain cheesiness.

PERFORMANCE, NARRATIVE AND/OR CONCEPT?:
there is performance footage but not a lot it also does not realistic. There is a narrative but not a strong as it is telling a story but the lyrics do not match visuals which makes it hard to follow. The girls are talking about there bodies being too good for someone this does come across symbolic and overall. So there is narrative but non linear they also tell narrative through there dancing.
Looking into camera

LOOKING/MODE OF ADDRESS:
the band do look into the camera to build up a direct connection with the audience. there is not often shots that do not contain them looking into the camera . They do look into the camera so the audience can feel involved .

STAR TREATMENT:
There is star treatment as there is a leader of the group , Beyonce is singled out more than the other girls because she is the main part of the group and the leader. However she is only singled out to a extent as the camera reverts back to her a lot but her with other members of band. Beyonce is also highlighted as the main one , as this is often good within girl bands.

MALE GAZE?:
Male gaze
There is male gaze throughout the video to attract both audiences , however as it is r and b this makes it also more appealing to the male audience . the girls are also almost the typical girl band , due to the song and the choice of mise en scene this will make it more appealing to the male audience as well as the female audience.

PACE + ANY VARIATION OF PACE:
the pace is fast this means the shots must be fast . the editing is very fast especially at the beginning and the end this builds up the pace to the beginning , this is then the same throughout the video. There is no variation of pace it is maintained throughout the video. there are some long shots but they are also moving shot which makes it interesting to watch and still at a fast pace which is better for videos without a narrative.

SHOT VARIETY + NO. OF SETUPS:
Green screen
There are a number of set ups and different sequences used again such as the beginning and the ending of the vid. There is a wide scope of shot variety, when there is lip synching there is often close ups and when there is dancing they are often long shots.

FX:
There is some special effects used such as the opening to open after the intro . there is also some layering used and special effects over the girls and the beginning there are transitions used to change between the different freeze frames.

LOCATION/S + MISE-EN-SCENE:
The locations used looks like it could be done on a green screens as this is all special effects. the mise en scene is very revealing which also fits with male gaze theory (laura mulvey).

Eg. 7 Spice Girls - Wannabe

ACT: Spice Girls
TRACK: Wannabe
YEAR: 1995
DIRECTOR: Matt rowe , R.stannford
GENRE: Dance / pop
MAIN AUDIENCE: M 15-24; significant F 15-24 appeal

RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN VISUALS + LYRICS:
we do not get any relationship between the lyrics and visuals they are more a symbolic meaning and the bigger picture to the video.

PERFORMANCE, NARRATIVE AND/OR CONCEPT?
the video is concept video there is narrative but it is symbolic rather than a story for us to follow. There is a lot of performance as they directly lip synch constantly into the camera there is a lot of footage with lip synching but little without.

PERFORMANCE STYLE:
Moving lip synching
there is a lot of lip synching throughout the video in fact little without it. this is a common characteristic within bands. the camera movements follow them , they are panning shots there are little with still movement they are all shaky and are moving. this is good as it makes the video faster pace. There is some dancing however i do this this would be easy to achieve as the movements are not that advanced.

LOOKING/MODE OF ADDRESS:
the girls look directly into the camera because this builds a relationship with the audience and is like them directly singing to the audience.this can create a sense of direct connection with the audience; as the uses and gratifications theory would have it, building a personal relationship.

STAR TREATMENT:
Not one person singled out
the video does not concentrate on one star usually there is a leader of the band however in this case this was not shown very clearly through the video. This means that the camera shots focuses on all of them instead of picking one out.

REPRESENTATIONS:
It is hard to discuss the representations of the gender and other representations as all the girls in the band are opposite which is very different to other girl bands they all have a different character instead of all been matching like other girl bands.

MALE GAZE?:
Male gaze
There is a lot of eye candy used this links with the laura mulvey theory of gaze , the girls all wear revealing clothing to attract both audiences. Although this already will appear to women and men it will attract a lot more men for this reason and the girls having there own unique look compared to previous girls bands such as girls aloud and destinys child.

PACE + ANY VARIATION OF PACE:
The pace of the video is fast which means shots change very quickly however this video is slightly different as they do not have a lot of still shots they are all moving which makes the video even more effective and interesting to watch as there is a lot going on. The pace stays the same apart from at the dancing part when the video slows down and there is one take for about 6 seconds this then stops and goes back to original speed. This is maintained throughout.

SHOT VARIETY + NO. OF SETUPS:
There is one set up , however there are a lot of different rooms , as we follow the girls around the building. There is a lot of shot variety however they are all moving shots which is very fast this is speeded up and slowed down but within this the shot variety does change , even though there is a lot of lip synching there is not a lot of close ups which we would expect.

FX:
Slowed down shot
There is some special effects used such as fading and layering . This helps the shot blend into one another and allows it flow smooth. There is a lot of continuity through the video which done by the special effects. At the beginning there is also freeze frames and slow down shot used at the introduction which sets the scene of what is going on.

LOCATION/S + MISE-EN-SCENE:
the locations used is just one location inside and outside and the different rooms. It is unclear thought what it is and what is going on . The mise en scene is done very well but is very un typical for this genre such as the costumes all being very different and not matching at all as they all have there own identity such as sporty spice , posh etc. This is un common as usually mise en scene matches with other members such as in boy bands.
