Eg. Pussycat dolls-Buttons

 ACT:  Pussycat dolls
TRACK: Buttons
YEAR: 2006
DIRECTOR: sean garrett
GENRE: r and b /pop
MAIN AUDIENCE: tween above
Lyrics and visuals
lyrics and visuals. The lyrics and visuals match but not directly. words such as physical and sexy mamma where the band dance sexy . She also when she says physical touches her hood and body.

                                                      Performance and narrative:
the performance in the video is nearly the whole video. There is little narrative to the video because the video is a performance video.  The performance is dancing throughout the video there is also lip synching , but these do not match the visuals apart from occasionally with the moves.
FX:
fire green screen effect added which looks very fake and i dont think fits wits with the video. The fire is used in the video however it does make the video more complex. The fx used also could of been added using effects such as layering. It also looks like lights could of been used on the floor to create this effect.

Goals Allowed

Yeovil Town may not be making a big impact in the Championship but they are joining forces with a record label to launch their own girl band in a bid to climb the pop charts and attract a new generation of supporters to the club.
They are bottom of English football's second tier but will be the first football club to have a girl group and the plan is for the band – to be based on the Pussycat Dolls – to perform at home matches for the rest of the 2013-14 season.
Auditions for females aged 18 and over will be held at Huish Park on 4 December and the successful girls, a lead singer and a group of south-west-based dancers, will work with the Famous Company to record a single that will be released on iTunes. The record will raise money for Prostate Cancer UK – the Football League's official charity.

Costumes for narrative

For the narrative section the older PCD will be wearing smart dresses and heels corresponding with their colour which they wear when they are younger. Here are pictures of each and who will be wearing them.

Tilly - Black/Red
Jess - Purple
Millie - White
Poppy (me) - Pink
Abi - Blue

KH- Casting and Characters

After discussing our idea further, we decided that we are going to require 10 characters instead of 5. There will be 5 Pussycat Dolls as the formed and older group, and then there will be 5 younger Pussycat Dolls. The characters will need to show intertextuality and reference to the Pussycat Dolls themselves, so they must be a similar looking as possible to achieve verisimilitude. For the older versions of the PCD we intend to use ourselves and another 2 girls who we have approached and are willing to participate.

For the younger versions of the PCD, we created posters asking for year 7s and 8s to come to the media room and to audition. Luckily, a group of 5 years 8s turned up and we explained our idea to them and what would be required of them, as well as getting them to write down their school email and tutor group so that further contact could be made. All 5 girls were enthusiastic, and they have featured in our MiniVid for One Direction - One Thing, so we knew they would be reliable and enthusiastic to take part throughout the process.

PP-Audience Research

MEDIA PROFILE- PUSSYCAT DOLLS

Websites:
Wiki search for pussycat dolls
The Pussycat dolls have appeared on many Websites They have appeared on Wikapedia telling us general information about the pussy cat dolls .This is the website with the most views for the pussy cat dolls as it probably contains the most information. There however are other websites containing information such asStarPulse containing info on the bands latest news, twitter feeds and myspace. They have also appeared on promoting websites such as contact music this also contains biographies and background info on most bands widely. As well as these sites the pussycat dolls also appear in the news online such as the Express, scottish daily record and the daily mail. This does show our secondary audience due to the daily mail being aimed at a slightly older audience than Tweens.

Radio:
The pussycat dolls have been played and interviewed on many radio stations they are most commonly played on Last Fm.They have also been interviewed on radio 1 before they broke up last year. Another popular station they are played on is tune in. As they have however all gone there seperate ways now . At the time they were interviewed on several radio stations such as these now there is single interviews of the artists themselves.

Tv and Film:
X Factor performance
They have produced there own reality tv show calledgirlicious released in 2008. This was an american tv show before the girls became famous in Britain. This however was not a success and they only produced one series. They also produced Search for the next doll released in 2007. This also wasnt released in Britain however was popular in US. This however did restrict there audience. They also made a series of online shows produced by kim kardashian. They also have performed on tv shows such as loose women, this morning, Jonathon ross dancing on ice and x factor.

Jai Ho

As well as producing reality tv they also did star in films . They are most popular in englan for starring in jai ho at the end of slumdog millionaire. They produced the dance and song to choreograph at the end of the film due to Nicholes close relationship and her background with india. They also made a documentry called thepussycat dolls . They have also produced short films for openings at there concerts as well as there music videos.

Magazines and the paper:
They have featured in many magazines from last year and years before due to the sudden break through and popularity in Britain. They have featured in papers such as the daily mail, the sun , the mirror , the express and the independent. This a variety of audience however they all do cover different topics from the group such as the news , the big break up. The sun however focuses on the band being new and male gaze. they also have a lot of bad gossip on the break up. They have also featured on a lot of magazine covers such as Blender, OK!, FHM and Pride magazine. These all represent different audience however mainly the male audience due to fhm and blender being mens magazines this shows another audience to consider.

Coverage recently:
I asked peers at home at school and online if they thought there had been any coverage on the pussy cat dolls. My over all outcome was that today it mostly seems to be about nicole rather than the other girls they have there own careers now but not as big as hers. They however said around this time last year they remember the girls breaking up and releasing there final album they also said they remember the break up and everything that went with that within news papers and tv.

Covers of there songs:
They have had many covers of the songs such as being sung on x factor and many talents show by other famous people. There songs have been covered on x factor by girl bands and individual artists this does appear to a wider scope of people such as familys and younger children. They also have covers done world wide such as on youtube . There music is very mainstream and is today widley recognised.

PP-Set up Ideas

Set Up Ideas

We brainstormed a list of set-ups and ideas. We came up with more than we plan to use and we will film a lot of them and see which work most effectively.

  2. Bathroom
  3. Garden
  4. Park
  5. Street
  6. Car park
  7. Shops (Charity Shop)
  8. Milkshake bar
  9. Hairdressers
  10. Dance Studio
  11. Performance
  12. Red Carpet
  13. Limo
  14. Concert
  15. Stage
  16. Classroom
  17. Recording studio
  18. Club
  19. Hotel
  20. Festival
  21. Train Station
  22. Bus Station

Locations

Earlier in the week, the group got together to find possible locations that we think would work effectively in the video. All the footage is from locations in the local area, however we do plan to also get some footage from slightly further away. The locations shown are a train station, urban street, car park, park and charity shop. The footage is shaky, but this is just a quick video made to give an idea of the kind of things we are looking for.

PP- Makeup

Make-Up

For the older set of PCD in the video we want them to have dramatic eye make up. This is seen throughout girl group examples such as The Saturdays, Little Mix and The Pussycat Dolls.

The Saturdays
This is done not only in music videos but whenever the groups are in public or advertised. This is shown in the picture to the left of Mollie from the Saturdays on a magazine cover.

Make-up is done like this to make the girls look more glamorous so they appeal to men (male gaze theory) and also so younger girls aspire to be like that as they look fashionable. These are both audiences we want to target and by doing our casts make up similar we aim to do this.
PCD

Little Mix

The make up looks tend to be very unnatural and smoky looking. In our music video this will work especially well as it will create more of a contrast between the older PCD and the younger more innocent version of themselves when they will wear little to no make up.

practice example

At first we questioned how easy it would be to do this dramatic make up and make it look professional and effective. However, after doing research online we found that there are YouTube channels dedicated to tutorials of celebrity inspired looks and how to look like these glamorous people. These are easy step by step tutorials and after following these we discovered it is quite easy to achieve these looks.

Here is a practice example I did of the dramatic make up on a volunteer friend. It wasn't time consuming and I already had the make up and equipment needed meaning that the make up won't effect or increase our budget for the music video.

PP-younger transformation

Younger Transformation

For our music video we hope to cast younger girls to play the younger version of the PCD. However, another option we are considering is making the older cast look younger. By doing this it increases verisimilitude as they will actually look like their younger selves and be more recognisable and make the narrative more clear.
pigtails and braces

To do this we would make the cast wear minimal or no make up and style their hair in an immature way such as plaits or pigtails. They will be wearing younger clothing also that is suited to the time era that they would have been younger in, e.g, 90s or early 2000s.

minimal make up

We could also buy clip in braces and make the younger ones wear glasses and other things that signify a teenage audience. This also helps connect to the tween audience as they may might be dealing with these kind of things yet it shows them that in time they will eventually grow up to be glamorous like the older PCD.

Idea Update 2

Our music video follows the Pussycat Dolls looking into their past, remembering how they wanted to be famous. There will also be some performance footage included throughout the video, with dancing & lip-syncing. There will be shots of the band as younger girls in various locations such as bedrooms, clothes shops/music shops, a bathroom, in a park & walking around town. We will also have shots of the band as they are now, in some of the same locations. We also see them getting out of a limo/black car onto a red carpet, and then looking back at their old rooms. The performance footage will be choreographed by Poppy, & the dance scenes will be filmed in an urban setting, with large spotlights behind the dancers, as this is commonly seen in Pussycat Dolls music videos.

Our music video summed up in one sentence - (Craig Mcneil said at the ASFF that usually a sign of a good music video is when it can be summed up in one sentence.)
"a girl-band reminisce about their lives and revisit their past, before they were famous"

planning update 1

On Wednesday 13th November we had a meeting with half of the cast of our music video. At lunchtime, we met with Becky Izzy A, Niamh,  Nisha, Izzy W, who are playing the parts of The Pussycat Dolls as young girls. During this meeting we talked about the production schedule, and we sorted out exactly what days and times the girls could film, and also sorted out what costumes and colours each girl will wear.
Jess Mitchell + Izzy W - PURPLE
Abi Birch + Becky - BLUE
Tilly Dennis + Niamh - RED
Millie James + Nisha - WHITE
Poppy Padgett + Izzy A - PINK

We came to the decision that we will hopefully be filming all the scenes with the younger girls on Friday 22nd at 3 - 5:30pm. We planned to film mainly at the charity shop, but also some shots in the streets of Ilkley. We made a list for each girl (what we need them to bring as their costume) and we made sure that each girl had a whole outfit that is suitable for their character.

Performance Costume

hoodie with studs on
For the performance footage we are going to have a different outfit to the narrative due the band being hip hop andd r and b . We have looked there previous videos to see what they dance and do there performace in. We noticed they all wear hoodies and urban clothing. This is especially in dont cha.the girls still use common girl bamd conventions such as the colours matchinf throughout and each having there own image but still linking together. We will however have yo be careful about what costumes we use due to them being revealling and inappropriate for our target audience . So we will take this into account when making and embellishing the costumes. Also in there videos they have alot of intertextuality with the name pussycat dols such as rings logos and the name printed in the background and on several pieces of clothing.
urban dress

same theme in the costume of each girl

One example of what one of the girls will be wearing is shorts a top and hoody. However we will adapt these such as sewing applique letters on and adding friging such as in there video I hate this part. This is the look we are aiming to go for and use within our music video. we will be adding the trims such as the frills and adding names onto back of hoodies and t shirts.

Eg.I hate this part right

ACT:  Pussycat dolls
TRACK: When i grow up
YEAR: 2008 october
DIRECTOR: wayne hector
GENRE: r and b /pop
MAIN AUDIENCE: tween above
relationship
RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN VISUALS + LYRICS:
the visuals do not match up to the lyrics all the way through. However there are some shots that have a over all meaning. such as them pointing into camera at the word you.  There is no direct relationship. The over all image of the video however reflects the song.

GENRE CHARACTERISTICS:
Costume
There are many genre characters such as the girls wearing outfits with similarities such as having there own colours. Another characteristics of this is the is the performance footage , there is a lot of performance footage and little narrative to the video this is a common convention of this genre as girls band use this to attract a wide audience. Another convention of this is the cheesiness of the band and there costume.

PERFORMANCE, NARRATIVE AND/OR CONCEPT:
There is little narrative within the video . The video is mostly performance footage this is very common within this genre. the genre is a girl band so we do expect this.

reference to the audience
PERFORMANCE STYLE:
there is a lot of performance footage. The style is very similar to there other videos. The choreography between all the the girls is the same in sequence and in time. They also reference the camera such as pointing into it and direct eye contact with the camera to build up the relationship with the audience.

Star treatment

STAR TREATMENT:
There is a lot of start treatment mainly on nicole as she is the leader of the band. She is the only singer and the only person that lip syncs . this makes her have more star treatment than the rest. The camera does not often show the other girls singly or close up. As they are just dancers we do expect this.

Fast pace at chorus
PACE + ANY VARIATION OF PACE:
The pace is roughly the same throughout, as the beat is low and continues through the song. The chorus pace is slightly faster as it needs to be to fit with the snacing. The pace is slowed down after chorus where there is lip synching . However this then picks back up.

Slow motion

FX:
There are a lot of effects used such as to slow down and freeze frame . Slow motion is used often in the performance and when they are shot singly appeal to male audience.

LOCATION/S + MISE-EN-SCENE:
The locations used look like a desert or deserted place.
it looks like america due to the cars and scenery and mise en scene used like the pin ball machine. The area also looks rural due to costumes and old cars. it also changes to a forest where we see wildlife. At the end thunder lightening and rain is used to create the atmosphere. There is also a scene with a river there a number of set ups.
