Mag Ad research

We started by looking at what magazines our girl band has been in. The main mag we had found the atomic kittens to feature in was ok magazine. They had all features separately in here telling life stories or being gossip. They have been in here as well for the latest singles and advertising there new album and dvd.

We didnt find many mag ads specifically by them as when the band came out digitisation and social media wasnt as big as it is today. They have mainly had mag ads advertising them getting back together and there reunion which was also featured on tv. The last thing i noticed they had articles on was the different band members leaving and changing. They were also in magazines for hobbies on the side such as big brother and personal live stories.

we wanted to look at what colour scheme they have used and how there style reflects there digi packs and videos. We looked at things such as the album covers linking with the theme of the poster such as picture on the left advertising the dvd. This reflects the album cover as it contains same text and same disco effects. On the right the picture reflects there first album that they made where they were the typical girly girls genre of music . Where they were very feminine taking on little inspiration from boy groups . The left is them later on changing and adding more of these features to attract different audiences.

We also wanted to look at what sort of things featured on mag ads such as OR code and small text that we would need to make sure we included. As the band are not as modern as girl bands today they have no mag ads like these. However we did find mag ads releasing tour dates. The main reason we wanted to look at atomic kitten anything was so we can get an idea of how subtle they link the texts as this is not common in other bands and usually all 3 texts are completely different where as theres match.

we found some mag ads of them in FHM boys mag. This is bringing in our secondary audience of the male audience. Linking with the male gaze theory. The fact the girls body parts are objectified and the girls are dressed in short clothing and having low cut tops on brings in this audience. We are going to try to follow this by wearing short dresses that link together via colour and try wear short dresses with low cut elements.

we have also looked at boy bands mag ads . These are very simple and often just contain them on a plain background wearing synchronised clothing and following the same style. We are going to reflect this by having the girl band against a white backdrop. This works for boy bands are they are a big statement . it cannot be as effective for girl bands as they are more glitsy and take on more of a womens audience then male. However as the industry is changing more and more girl bands are doing this and taking on these characteristics.

Little mix are one of the new latest most successful girl band of 4. They have been such a success this magazine is aimed at teens up to 24. Which is our target audience. We can take characteristics from this such as them being silly having fun and applying it in our own. The girls are also on a plain background and there colour scheme doesnt match they have the same style but colours are very different this also picking up from boy band ads.

PP-Lyrics Booklet

We chose to include a lyrics booklet in our digipak as it is a common convention seen across them. Our target audience of teens are also likely to be the kind of audience to want to sing along and mimic atomic kitten and want to aspire to be famous like them. By creating a lyrics booklet they can learn the songs and sing along, and the booklet also includes images of the group that are new and unique to this booklet.

PP-Rough cut 2

This is our second rough cut. We plan to put this on fan forums. Unlike the previous rough cut this is a complete cut, and we have been experimenting with different effects and transitions. We have used a lot of layering in this cut and we want to get feedback on whether this is effective. This rough cut also has a slight unfinished ending as we are not sure what would be the most effective way of ending it. Originally we planned to have the ending shot to be the boyfriend looking at pictures of the couple and him actually being the one to be missing her after all. However after editing we don't know if this is the best choice. This is something we hope to get extensive feedback and ideas on.

PP- Testing or code

This is a short video demonstrating that our QR code works by testing it. I simply scan it on my phone and it immediately gives me the option to open our twitter page. This was quick and simple and any one with a smart phone is able to do it, making it applicable to a large audience.

PP-Mag as teaser 1

This is our first teaser ad. As our girl group is called 'Atomic Kitten' having a kitten on our teaser ad creates narrative enigma as there is a connection, but it is subtle and may take the audience a while to figure out the link. The QR code on the stomach of the kitten leads to our twitter page, and when reading our tweets it will help anchor the advertisement.

We took this picture of a kitten at one of our friends houses who has a kitten. We then edited it in photoshop to get rid of the dull background and blurred the edges to replicate the fur that editing out the background got rid of.

It is also known that funny cat videos are very popular online, with whole websites dedicated to them. This craze makes our teaser ad even more current and appealing to a larger audience.

Rough Cut 1

Here is our first roughcut. It isn't complete, but we wanted to get feedback on a basic cut first so then we can gradually improve the video according to the feedback we get and they can also help us with what we plan to do.

pp-history of girl group and genre

The Shirelles
The Girl Group Genre

The girl group phenomenon first exploded on to the music scene in the early 1960's, when an all-girl quartet from New Jersey called the Shirelles scored a number one hit in 1961 with their classic Will You Love Me Tomorrow. (SOURCE: yahoo voices)

The Andrews Sisters were the most successful of the early girl groups. The Supremes were the most successful of the wave of girl groups of the 1960s, holding 12 number-one singles on The Billboard Hot 100. In later eras the girl group template would be applied to disco, contemporary, R&B, and country-based formats as well as pop. (SOURCE: Wikipedia )

bananarama

The 1980's was a revolutionary period in the history of popular music, with a variety of new musical genres that each included valuable contributions from girl groups. The new wave movement saw huge crossover success with The Go Gos, The Bangles, and England's Bananarama. (SOURCE: yahoo voices)

One of the most popular musical acts of the 1990's was an all-girl pop group from England. With larger-than-life personas and huge smashes such as Wannabe and Say You'll Be There, the Spice Girls sparked a music phenomenon that included a major motion picture, big advertising contracts, dolls, video games and much, much more. TLC

Of these later groups, the Spice Girls and TLC are considered the most successful, with the albums Spice by the Spice Girls and CrazySexyCool by TLC being the best-selling albums of all time by a girl group. (SOURCE: wiki)

Music Videos

As I mentioned earlier, the Spice Girls were an extremely influential girl group. In the 1960s, the closest thing to a music video was the filmed performances of the groups television appearances. In these videos they would all wear the same and stay in sync with movement throughout.

Completely contrasting this, 30 years later the Spice Girls completely changed the stereotype of the girl group videos, giving each member their own individuality and character. They did this through clothing and through the narrative of the video, also a newer concept to the girl group genre. Typically this individuality was mainly seen in boy bands. Nowadays, the most frequent appearance of the girl group is some individuality, for example they all may be wearing different things but all the same colour scheme, or all the same but different colours. This is seen in bands such as The Saturdays.

Rough cut

RoughCut of Narrative

When starting to edit we decided to start by editing the narrative alone and upload it to youtube. By doing this we could get feedback to see if people think the narrative works and is a good storyline.

KH- fonts

Front cover font 'Modern No. 2'
When experimenting with fonts, we used the ones that were already installed onto Adobe Photoshop. To make the product more advanced, we downloaded similar fonts off Dafont.com, to replace these pre-installed fonts. The fonts that we downloaded are ATypeWriterForMe, Pixel Splitter and TAR Just A Monday, for the sticker and back cover of the digipak.
However, when we tried searching for the font on the front cover, we didn't have much luck, so we decided upon using the pre-installed font. We think this font looks better as it is clearer and more structured, making it more eye catching.

KH - Experimenting with Digipak Sticker

To begin with, we created a rectangular sticker and various font/colour variations of these stickers. We layered this onto our front cover draft and got some feedback off our classmates and teacher. We were told that the 'Live Bonus DVD Included' needed to be enlarged as it is a major part of the promotional package. As a group, we also decided that the square sticker was too harsh and didn't fit in with the theme of the digipak, so we decided to try a circular sticker instead.
Transparent background

We created a circular shape and put it onto a transparent background, then experimented further with the different colours. We have tried to stick to the 3 colour rule, whilst also adding a 4th colour (pink). We took on board the feedback given and made the 'Live Bonus DVD Included' larger and more clear. We also differentiated the fonts, to add a visual range to the product.
Editing the colours and fonts

These are not complete or final, but they have given us a starting point for developing our final sticker. We intend on downloading some alternative fonts for our final product too.
